Nitrate-Reducing Oral Bacteria Study

Written by Kourosh Maddahi — March 02, 2023

This is one of the first studies to directly test the hypothesis of a priori–identified nitratereducing oral bacteria affecting cardiometabolic outcomes. Our results support the hypothesis that oral nitratereducing bacteria play a beneficial role in BP regulation and insulin resistance. Future longitudinal studies with enhanced assessment of nitratereducing bacterial exposure predicting progression of cardiometabolic risk biomarkers and incident clinical disease will improve temporal inference necessary to inform causality and inform the development of future intervention studies that could manipulate oral nitratereducing capacity.
